Simply the best for non-professionals

I own three dictionaries of philosophy, but the Penguin Reference Dictionary of Philosophy has become my go-to guide. Its extensive entries are neither simplistic nor overbearing for the non-professional interested in topical summaries concerning individuals, systems, and terms commonly encountered in the study of philosophy. Highly recommended.

This book is brilliant. Formations of Class and Gender is a sophisticated and passionately written account of the classed and gendered identities of a small group of working-class white women who live in the north-west of England. It is ethnography at its best, having been built on long-term, thoughtful engagements in the field. When Beverly Skeggs met these women they were all students on a variety of 'caring' courses at a further education college. More than eleven years later, the production of this text testifies to the quality of theoretical analysis which can be produced if only those who fund research or press for lists of publications were willing to acknowledge that leading edge work normally requires real time. The text is concerned with the production of cultural and social relations and is located within an analytical framework which draws on the work of Bourdieu... Overall the text is a robust piece of writing which I have already recommended as required reading to my research students. (Gender and Education)

Skegg's Bourdieu-influenced account of British cultures of class provides a useful empirical corrective to the more grandiose theorizing within recent cultural studies, underscoring not just the economic but the cultural and attitudinal gulf between working-class individuals and the left/feminist intellectuals who claim to be their allies. For this reason alone, it should be required reading. (International Journal of Cultural Studies)

In a discipline that boasts a high division of labour, this book goes a long way in dismantling the futile divide between class theory and feminism. It is an articulate and impassioned ethnography, fuelled by an anger of inequality but also an anger at those who are reluctant to challenge it. At a time when sociologists seem less concerned with the tangible and more interested in the abstract, Skeggs shows how these can be used productively together; theory becomes a means to an end rather than an end in itself... This book really deserves to be read and taken seriously. It is a good example of responsible research which seeks to bring out the pains and humour of working- class life and the ways in which people negotiate their environments... But the greatest achievement of this book is that it gives a voice to a group of women in the hope that they can '...no longer be ignored, made invisible, deconstructed to irrelevance, dismissed as part of a redundant concept, or pathologized as just another "social problem"' (168). Beverley Skeggs is the editor of The Production of Feminist Cultural Theory (1995); co-author of Issues in Sociology: The Media (with J Mundy); co-author of Workwise (1990) (with G Palmer and M Webb); and also author of numerous journal articles.

Awesome book

Fascinating read, it really gets into the depths of respectable vs non-respectable working class femininities, the way working class women are trained to behave in order to be socially acceptable and even makes a lot of my own thoughts, feelings and behavior make a lot of sense, I only wish she'd added research on more stigmatized working class women (like myself) but really just a fascinating read.

The phenomenon of glass transition is now recognised in the science of materials in different areas including foods. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of foods is extremely important in the prediction of conditions for proper food processing. In conventional methods for evaluation of stickiness in spray drying of sugar-rich foods, the direct relation between Tg and stickiness has not been established yet. This book describes the controlling of the stickiness and product recovery by controlling the temperature difference between product temperature and Tg during the spray drying process of foods. It consits of fundamental studies of Tg with new informations such as complete melting temperature, contribution of structural relaxation, solid-solid interaction, effect of the melting rate on thermal history and the prediction of multi-component food models which are useful for process modeling. A mathematical model to illustrate the dynamic stickiness behavior of sticky products in relation to inlet variables of the spray drying process is developed. It is used to find a set of inlet variables to minimize the stickiness in spray drying of sugar-rich foods.

About the Author
Dale Shipley, Ed.D., was Director of the School of Early Childhood Education at Ryerson University, Toronto, from 2001 to 2006. Dale has had a varied career in the education sector, beginning as a teacher in the high schools of Ontario and England, and continuing for thirteen years as a professor in the early childhood education program at Algonquin College. Her career in early childhood education was interrupted on three occasions when she worked as a consultant or administrator for organizations affiliated with change in the Ontario postsecondary sector. These experiences broadened her understanding of the influence of the early years on later learning success and deepened her commitment to high quality early childhood education as essential preparation for life. Dale believes that the new paradigm for early childhood education in Canada should blend constructivist educational theories with the culturally diverse values and early learning priorities that permeate our society and develop a made-in-Canada model that works best for our nation.

About the Author
Bruce S. Jansson (MA, University of Chicago and Harvard University; PhD, University of Chicago) is Professor in the Department of Social Work at the University of Southern California (USC). He joined the USC faculty in 1973 after working in Michigan as a community organizer and planner for tenant rights. His scholarly interests focus on advancing case advocacy and policy advocacy in social work, as well as examining the history and practice of social welfare policy. He also has served as the Moses Distinguished Research Professor at the City University of New York Graduate Center. Jansson is probably most well-known for the book THE SIXTEEN TRILLION DOLLAR MISTAKE: HOW THE U.S. BUNGLED ITS NATIONAL PRIORITIES FROM THE NEW DEAL TO THE PRESENT (2001). The author of several other titles, Jansson is currently working on two books. One discusses how social workers and other staff in the health and human services can link case and policy advocacy in different sectors including mental health, child welfare, corrections, education, and civil rights. The other analyzes why the United States has not significantly reduced health disparities in the last five decades, and whether the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 will achieve this result.

About the Author
Alan J. Daly, PhD, is an assistant professor of education at the University of California, San Diego. He earned his PhD in education from the University of California, Santa Barbara.� In addition to fifteen years' experience in public education as a teacher, psychologist, and administrator, Daly has also been the program director for the Center for Educational Leadership and Effective Schools at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In this position he collaboratively supported the delivery of high-quality services and research to five school districts, focusing on social networks, trust, and potential of systems for change. Daly has presented and published work in the areas social network theory and impact of accountability policy as well as on educational reform and organizational learning.

A Must Read!!

Social Network Theory and Educational Change really nails the topic of educational change using a unique and interesting approach. This book reports high quality research by leading scholars in educational reform/change in a manner that is thoughtful, clear, and can be applied to the work of improving education. As there is so much discussion around the term `social network' it was helpful to have a grounding in the concept both in the outset and conclusion of the book--each chapter includes scholarly and practical insights that make this book useful for a wide variety of scholars and educators who are interested in educational reform. Unlike other books on educational change, it was great to see how social networks can be applied, and how the approach yields important insights into the process of change. Although Social Network Theory and Educational Change is focused on education in a broad sense, most of the information/insights can be applied in a wide variety of settings such as business, healthcare, or any other field that relies on social interactions to get work accomplished. One of the most thoughtful and engaging books on educational reform I have read in a long time.
