Good story

The beginning of this book almost made me quit, but I hung in there and it did get better. The writer used an excess of words to tell the story and that was annoying, but overall the book kept me interested. There were times where the scene changed from one location to another in the next paragraph and no mention of getting there. That is poor editing for me. I am not sure if all the history was reasonably accurate, but a couple of things were so wrong in time and stood out to me....in one place she referred to slaves as "blacks". That term would not have been used in those years. The other was an offhand remark about having to eat the cheese from a mousetrap... The mousetrap was not invented until about 100 years after the time period of this book. Picky? Yes. But, again, good editing should have caught those.

This is truly an absorbing book about the American Revolutionary War and the British siege of Charleston, and the heroic stance of revolutionaries in ultimately winning the war. It also is an intriguing story of one woman's struggle to survive, to make a place for herself when her generous dowery is spent on other family members deemed more worthy than she, and the grace she exhibits in being treated as a poor relative.Intertwiined in this are two love stories, one which leads to death and profound grief and loss, and the other which leads to marriage with one of the leaders of the revolutionary forces and the very different kind of life she comes to lead with both intrigue, suspense, and ultimately the opportunity to live a normal life that she realizes will be quite an adjustment for her husband after the suspenseful life he led as a revolutionary commander. This book literally kept this reader up all night. It's one of those kind of books. Compliments to the author who did her research well and made history come to life. Kathy R Blackman

Good read.

Well developed characters and realistic historical setting. I cannot evaluate the historical accuracy of the story as I am not an authority on the history of the revolutionary war or of the main military figures. The story flowed and the characters seemed realistically portrayed.
I especially enjoyed the depiction of the clothes making and the dress shop.
I recommend this tale only for the reader who can start and finish the book pretty much non- stop. I couldn't put it down and stayed up late to finish it. I can't say that about very many books. In terms of my lack of productivity while I read, that's probably a good thing!! Thanks. Sally
