Treat yourself to that rare technical book that combines excellent info with interesting (and motivating) writing

Donald W. Connelly's Digital Radio Production, 2nd edition is impressive to this former educator and new streaming and broadcast radio graduate. Incredibly helpful and thorough grounding in radio production skills. Very well-written. I certainly wasn't expecting any such thing out of a technical book. He often caught me by surprise and even made me laugh.
He's masterful at motivating students in a concise way to excellent habits. Consider this small gem, ""Always back up your work. There is nothing more frustrating than to have a file corrupted or have someone accidentally delete a file, and it will happen. With a backup file, you grin like a Cheshire cat and save the day for everyone."
The book covers the basics of using the most popular digital editing software, very specific tips (and a CD with 93 cuts of examples of good and bad audio production), types of microphones and tips for positioning them for various situations and effects, control boards and mixing, the roles a production person plays, the art of storytelling, fieldwork and live recording on location, processing audio, web casting, broadcasting, and much more.
College students who want to go into any aspect of radio production will want this book for its excellent advice on how to prepare and advance in this as a career field and for the sections on getting and keeping a first job and on writing a resume. My earlier degree was in elementary education. I only wish I'd had such guidance for my efforts to job hunt.
I wish I'd had this book assigned as my textbook the semester I took Audio Production. The one assigned was available used and cheap, but it was boring and greatly lacking in helping us understand the radio industry as it is today. Digital Radio Production serves up a first-rate education that makes it a resource to hang onto after the semester is done. I got my copy after graduating because I knew I have much more to learn in the field for the radio work I am entering. My copy of Connelly's book was used but not as cheap as the assigned textbook. It was worth every penny.
